Musical Notes

New Braunfels Chamber Music was founded in the summer of 2017, but that was not the beginning of the story. Concerts had been held intermittently at the Unitarian Universalists of New Braunfels for a number of years and were arranged by a handful of hosts from within the UU community. A recurring and popular guest was esteemed pianist Richard Dowling, and he was the nucleus of the series. In annual concerts coordinated and presented by the Piatigorsky Foundation, Richard—together with other outstanding artists of the Piatigorsky Foundation—brought world–class classical music to New Braunfels.

But one concert of that caliber each year just wasn’t enough for the rapidly expanding town of New Braunfels! William McNally, a friend of Richard’s, moved to New Braunfels in 2016 together with his wife pianist Daria Rabotkina and their son Nicholas. When he learned that Richard would be playing an all–Scott Joplin concert in the spring of 2017, he met up with Richard and also his New Braunfels hosts, Kathryn Walker and Ted Mills. When William expressed interest in presenting a series of concerts, Kathryn and Ted were thrilled at the idea, and later that summer, New Braunfels Chamber Music, with William serving as Artistic Director, became real.

The first season was an experiment and kicked off with the horn trios of Brahms and Ligeti. Other concerts that season included a full bassoon recital, a voice recital, and two solo piano recitals—one by Victor Asuncion of the Piatigorsky Foundation, and the other by William’s wife Daria. The first audience numbered about forty in attendance, and we were pleased with the turnout. But then it grew – by the last two concerts of the season, the hall was filled to capacity!

Now in our second season, we are once again presenting a wide array of concert experiences for music lovers in the greater New Braunfels community.
